Tank Fest 2002

Up Model Expo 2001 Tank Fest 2002 Model Expo 2002

On Sunday June 30th Bovington Museum held their Tank Fest. This basically means they get everything (well not quite everything!) out that will run and put on a display for the public. There were a lot more people than expected but everything went to plan and the weather held out. We went down on the Saturday afternoon and set up camp ready for an early start Sunday.

Here we are as usual courtesy of Mark of Mark-1-Tanks all ready to go early Sunday Morning.

Later on in the day the stand was attracting quite a lot of attention.

The new 1/6th King Tiger received it's debut at the show and drew some admiring glances.

This model really is a monster, that's my hand you can see having a fiddle!

I think I used to have an Action Man model of this!!

The next few pictures show a variety of armoured cars and trucks.

And of course the trusty Stalwart. These are really futuristic looking even now, what must they have seemed like back in the '60s when they first appeared.

Murray Walker, the famous Formula 1 commentator made an appearance.

Apparently he was a Sherman crew member in WWII. A very lucky and brave man to still be alive.

This little tank is a Stuart or Honey (depending on what you want to call it!).

It gave a demonstration of loading onto a transporter...

...and then driving away.

Howard's favourite the noisy clanking T-34. I couldn't believe the amount of mechanical noise these things make.

You'll have to excuse the poor quality of the pictures but I think the next two are worthy of inclusion.

There wasn't many tanks of this vintage that were doing this, something to be said about the simple T-34.

In complete contrast to the T-34 you could barely hear the PzIII!

I'm not sure why the turret side hatch is open, perhaps it gets hot inside. Anybody confirm?

This picture seems to show some puzzled bodies looking for the ignition key!!!

And finally this picture of my Panther appeared in the Bournemouth Echo the week after the show. Fortunately Jim is also in the picture which will placate him somewhat (maybe!)
